Akureyri

Akureyri é unha cidade situada no norte de Islandia, ao fondo do fiorde de Eyjafjörður arrodeada de montañas, Súlur a 1.213 metros sobre o nivel do mar, e Hlíðarfjall a 1.116 metros, é o segundo centro urbano despois da área de Reiquiavik; segundo o censo de 2007 tiña 17,253 habitantes.

Historia

Helgi Magri Eyvindarson, procedente de Noruega asentouse na área no século IX, aínda que a primeira mención de Akureyri data do ano 1562 cando unha muller foi condenada aquí por adulterio. No ano 1602 os daneses estableceron un posto comercial , aproveitando o porto natural e por ser a rexión circundante boa para a agricultura.

O asentamento permanente comezou no ano 1778 e o rei de Dinamarca concedeulle a Akureyri o status de cidade en 1786. Á cidade foille concedido un foro municipal para favorecer a consolidación dos asentamentos permanentes en Islandia, en 1836 perdeu a súa licenza como posto comercial pero foille de novo concedido en 1862, co que comezaron a aparecer numerosas pequenas industrias derivadas dos produtos agrícolas, aumentando no século XX co éxodo do campo á cidade. Dende 1990 as industrias pesqueiras veñen desprazando ás manufacturadas e os ingresos procedentes do turismo aumentan ano a ano.

A Universidade de Akureyri fundouse en 1987.
